Dear COAEYC Member & Community Partner,

It is exciting to realize that in January of 2018, the Colorado AEYC will celebrate its 50th anniversary. As organizations mature and hit these milestones, it is incumbent upon them to reflect and assess how the mission and membership needs are being met.

Beginning in the Fall 2016, COAEYC has been taking several steps to prepare for this milestone — including hiring a new executive director, working to meet NAEYC's increased expectations of its affiliates, and gathering feedback from you, our members.

Prior to the changes in Colorado, NAEYC embarked on a new mission, vision, and strategic plan to both promote the early childhood profession, and to strengthen the organization and its affiliates to become highly performing inclusive organizations. While early childhood education professionals across the country wholeheartedly supported these changes in 2013, they also ushered in significantly higher standards of affiliation for membership organizations like ours.

When we began our listening sessions with our members and community partners in 2016 we heard a deeply shared commitment to these same priorities in Colorado. You also told us that over time COAEYC had ceased to serve its members' needs. And we knew from our communications with NAEYC that our organization was not meeting the revised affiliation standards that all NAEYC affiliates across the country had adopted.

Your feedback, as well as the changes in NAEYC’s affiliation standards have motivated — and at times demanded — swift organizational change for COAEYC.

In order to respond to your needs and to satisfy new NAEYC affiliate charter expectations, COAEYC has begun a transformation to become a highly performing inclusive organization, representing multiple dimensions of diversity.

In Colorado this transformation will require many changes, such as inclusive elections of new leadership, organizational restructuring to ensure increased capacity, and more localized development and networking opportunities for members.

As part of this transformation the COAEYC nomination and election process was revised to conduct an inclusive election of new leadership determined by the membership. Last month, members like you nominated twelve leaders to comprise a new board that is more reflective of our Colorado membership.  Once the new board has been elected by the membership, the COAEYC board will work together with its members and community partners to continue this transformation, creating a highly performing inclusive organization that is truly reflective of the Colorado communities and members we serve.

We are incredibly excited about these changes which will ensure COAEYC remains an affiliate of NAEYC for fifty more years and meets your changing needs! We also recognize that while this growth is positive, it also requires letting go of what was in order to make room for what can be. It is in this spirit that we want to recognize and express appreciation to the past and outgoing COAEYC leadership for their many years of service.

Thank you so much for your partnership in moving this transformation forward. We look forward to sending you further updates throughout the summer. As always, if you have any feedback about COAEYC or the transformation currently underway, please do not hesitate to contact Jolene at 303-791-2772.  By working together we can make COAEYC the more highly performing inclusive organization every Early Childhood Professional in Colorado cannot live without!

Sincerely,

Karen Kirshenbaum
COAEYC Board President

Jolene R. Mutchler, M. Ed.
COAEYC Executive Director
